Working Bibliography of Cuckoos and Turacos of the World
by Johannes Erritzoe with contribution by Oscar van Rootselaar
Sponsored by The Danish Ministry of Research and Information Technology,
Copenhagen.
About the book
There
are 40 genera and 140 species of cuckoos following Howard and Moore. It
is a cosmopolitan familie found in all parts of the world ekcept arctic,
the southernmost South America and Sahara. One of the more distinctive
features of the cuckoos is that many members have brood parasitism, which
has made this familie so interesting that it is among the most studied
bird families.
There
are 6 genera and 20 species of turacos following Howard and Moore. They
are all to be found in sub-Saharan Africa. Most species have splendid
colours.
This
annotated bibliography bring 5,634 references + c. 100 last second
entries, which have got a letter after the number. None popular accounts
have been included. A sample page from the book
is available here.
This
bibliography breaks with tradition in a number of ways:
It is the first bird-book bibliography with a CD ROM attached,
which make it possible for users with a computer to search all things
they may want.
In
addition to the main list of references, several other supplementary tools
have been added:
There
is a list of vernacular English names given c. 550 different cuckoo and
turaco names and their different scientific names. The sources are also
given.
There
are a species index and a greographical index for users without access
to a computer. In the geographical index all countries of the world are
listed also these lacking references to highlight gaps in our knowledge.
These countries are provided with a general reference in which at least
something about cuckoos or turacos is included.
A
list of keywords is given alphabetically as a help for using the CD ROM.
As
a help for researchers all scanned books, papers, periodicals and bibliographies
are listed.

Reviews
This
bibliography of over 5600 entries covers the 40 genera (140 species) of
Cuckoos and the six genera (20 species) of Turacos and will be welcomed
by those studying these species. Species, country or keywords are added
to entries where the title is not sufficiently explicit. A list of vernacular
names with their current scientific equivalents according to Howard and
Moore is included along with species and geographical indices, a list
of key words and literature consulted. In addition the CD ROM enables
easier extraction of information.

This
book provides a list of references on cuckoos and turacos numbered and
ordered by author's name and year of publication. The list is also provided
on a CD-ROM to facilitate searches. The electronic reference list is accessed
through Adobe Acrobat, which is available free on the Internet. Some references,
primarily those for which the title is not sufficiently informative as
to subject matter, are accompanied by comments, such as the name of the
studied species, geographical region concerned, and key words. This information
is very useful for defining the scope of searches using the CD-ROM
Finally,
when only references published before 1996 were included in the comparison
[from the reviewer's own database and diverse publications], only one
reference was not found in the book (99.6%, n = 225)
. However, it
can also be said that based on the comparisons presented here, most of
the references on cuckoos and turacos are included in this book. Although
some references, largely those from the most recent years, could not be
included, this book is potentially a good tool for students and researchers
looking for literature on these families, especially for finding references
published in journals not included in general reference databases such
as Current Contents, Biopsis, and ISI.
