In his endless search for knowledge and his care in preserving and sharing his discoveries, Johannes Erritzoe embodies the very spirit of an institution of higher learning. He has cultivated his youthful interest
in ornithology into a specialized knowledge sought after by both experts and lay enthusiasts around the world.

Although Johannes Erritzoe was unable to pursue formal advanced training in his field, he undertook to study under and work for several leading scientists and researchers with whom he later etablished collaborative and mutually rewarding partnerships. His energetic pursuit of research done both cooperatively and alone has resulted in
a remarkable body of work.

The tenacity and enthusiasm of Johannes Erritzoe are qualities held dear by Alaskans. Though lacking a conferred academic degree, Johannes Erritzoe avidly pursued his dream of studying birds and their habitats around the globe, succeeding despite prejudices sometimes in the formally trained scientific community. He is now regarded by many of his colleagues as one of the foremost experts in his field, and is highly respected not only for the breadth of his knowledge but also
for the depth of his commitment.

Johannes Erritzoe's enthusiasm for his subject reaches far beyond the confines of the academic world. His books and published articles have found an audience among both technical scientists and amateur naturalists. Moreover, his extensive specimen collection contains a tremendous store of knowledge for students and researchers alike.
One such beneficiary of his expertise is the University of Alaska Museum,
where he serves as research associate and advisor, Johannes Erritzoe's unstinting generosity of knowledge and sheer joy of discovery have inspired many of those with whom he has collaborated.
