Two curious woodpeckers

Two curious woodpeckers:

1 Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopus major) juvenile female with grey on upperparts in stead of black.

2. A feather from the back showing grey colour with a blackish subterminal band.

3. Middle-spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopus medius) male with a pale brown area on the back in stead of black.

Both these abnormalities are examples of individuals with low melanin saturation (Jon Fjeldså in litt.)
